Despite the chill on the petals of, “The Orange Blossom Special”, as well as the absence of the opening sounds from Joe Ben Cason’s flat-top guitar, "the show must go on."
Cason missed the Saturday Night bash at the Cotton Pickin’ Theatre in Point last Saturday. The show’s impresario is recuperating from a medical procedure at Baylor Hospital in Dallas; however, he is expected to be back on stage by next week.
He was missed, but it was still a great Shindig Show. The snowbirds, Hal and Mary Ann Pepin, gave their last performance of the season before heading back to Michigan. The duo always gives a crowd-pleasing performance, and they wowed the folks that night. As the “Spoon Lady”, Mary Ann did a single, and she was filled with exuberance as she kept time with the rhythmic taps of her spoons. All in fun, the band began increasing the tempo of music. The “Spoon Lady” kept up with rhythm, still smiling her big smile, stirring the audience to a thunderous applause.
The snowbirds will be back to East Tawakoni, their winter residence, sometime in November.
Newly wed, Clyde Shreves, was thrilled to get on center stage. Having been married only the previous day, he wooed his new bride with affectionate love songs such as, “I’ll Share My World with You” and “Walk Through this World with me”. Looking very spiffy in his cowboy attire, it was his first appearance at the Cotton Pickin’ Theatre. He delivered his country love songs with gusto.
Another first-timer to the theater was 17-year-old, Crissy Harold, from McKinney. This young gal impressed the crowd with her rendition of several Patsy Cline selections. To the swinging beat of “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” and her very girlish presentation of “Stupid Cupid”, she was lavished with cheers of approval and a hat full of tips.
Tagged by Darrell Felts as “The Liberated Pastor” on Country Music Nights, Danny Calk never ceases to surprise the crowd. This time, in a happy-go-lucky mood, he thrilled everyone with the rock and roll song “Chantilly Lace”, a song written and originally performed by the Big Bopper. Danny performed the song with a Jerry Lee Lewis flair, his fingers flying up and down the keyboard without missing a note.
Gospel Night on Saturday will feature a top performance from Gospel Singer Michael Meshell from Dallas.
