FROM THE LOFT

Everyone in East Texas is sure enjoying the cooler weather after the heat wave that was most of July and August. It sure was relentless. My vegtable garden burned up, and this is the first year since we've lived here that I haven't been able to nurse at least one tomato plant through the heat. Guess I will have to put in some fall plants.

Between my work for WinnsboroToday.com and trying to get another book written and trying to promote the books already published, there is not a lot of time for other things. But I have learned that it is important to make time for the things that bring you joy, so I try to do that when I can.

One of those things is doing music with my kids. Since they live in the Dallas area, getting together to jam is not something we can do often, but we performed at the recent Cabaret show at the Winnsboro Center for the Arts, so we had to get together to practice. It sure was fun and quite a thrill to share the stage with my talented kids.

There was a moment of great poignancy for me as we sang and I thought of my father and how pleased he would have been to see and hear us. The talent and love of music started with him, and I am still adjusting to the fact that he is no longer with us. My inclination is always to share anyting related to music with him, and I have to remind myself that I can't. Unless, like a country song says, "There's holes in the floor of heaven."

The Cabaret was wonderful, with lots of talented folks and a mix of classical music, country, folk, and jazz. It was so much fun, the Center has decided to do more shows like that. So my kids and I will have another excuse to get together to play music.

We're gearing up for Autumn Trails in Winnsboro, and I hope everyone will support the businesses that are sponsoring our Autumn Trails Preview page. I will be putting that page up by the end of the week and it will have the full schedule of events for the month of October.
