Support
the Main Street Program
by Maryann Miller
The
Main Street Program continues its efforts to help with the revitalization
of downtown Winnsboro, and the organization needs assistance from the
business and citizens of town. They have an operating budget of approximately
$48,000 and receive $33,300 from The Winnsboro Economic Development Corporation
(WEDC). "We have to make up the difference," Denise Miranda
said. "And we have to come to the community to ask for donations."
According to
Denise, who is the Main Street Program director, the city has to continue
to move forward now that it has the official Main Street designation from
the Texas Historical Commission. "There are so many benefits,"
she said. "The main one being how revitalization will keep the downtown
area economically viable."
Some of the
specific benefits she mentioned include design assistance for renovations
and restorations of existing buildings. (So maybe we won't have to continue
to tear old buildings down.) The city can also apply for state grants
to help cover some of the cost of restorations and improvements.
"There
is so much heritage tourism going on now," Denise said. "And
we can to tap into that by fixing the streets and sidewalks, renovating
buildings, and creating a place that draws people because of historical
significance."
Tourism is
an important part of the economy of Winnsboro, and the entire city benefits
from restoration in the downtown district. If you want to support this
effort, your tax-deductible donation will be greatly appreciated. Donations
can be sent to the Main Street Program's office at the Chamber of Commerce,
201 W. Broadway, Winnsboro TX 75494.
