Main Strret Reception
by Maryann Miller

To mark the first anniversary of the Winnsboro Main Street Program, the Advisory Board hosted a reception at the Ivy Garden Tea Room on January 30th from four to six P.M. A number of business owners and other interested individuals gathered that afternoon to celebrate the accomplishments of the program and to publicly say 'thanks' to Denise Miranda for a successful first year as manager.

"Actually, it's not so much about me," Denise said. "It's really an opportunity to inform the community about what the Main Street Program does. We want people to know about us and what our goals are for the city."

So what is the program and what does it do? It's a group of individuals who work on a volunteer basis, with the exception of Ms. Miranda, to promote restoration of historic buildings, stimulate growth, and encourage tourism. The focus is on downtown because an attractive and thriving downtown area stimulates the economic strength of the entire city.

As part of the Texas Historical Commission's recognition of Winnsboro as a Main Street City, Texas First Lady Anita Perry will be in Winnsboro on March 24th to make the official proclamation. That ceremony will take place at the Depot, with a reception to follow. "We're really excited about that," Denise said. "And we would like to see the whole city support this event."

Working closely with Denise are members of the Main Street Advisory Board; Shirley Watters, Tracy Hopkins, Cindy Yarbrough, Lori Forsyth, Gordon Wilkinson, Richard Foster, and Barbara Richert. They are responsible for the four main committees - Design, Promotion, Economic Restructuring, and Organization - and welcome help in all of these efforts. "We can always use volunteers," Denise said. "Especially with the events surrounding the First Lady's visit. That will be a good opportunity to get the community more involved, not only in the Main Street Program but every endeavor that benefits Winnsboro."
