Ask the Birdlady

Q. Is there a such thing as a orange parakeet?

A. I have never heard or seen an orange Budgie Parakeet. There are however over 200 species of Parakeets in the world. Some of those species have orange in different places on the body but I don't know of any that are all orange.

There is an orange weaver finch that is mostly orange when in full color, and red factor canaries feed color food will become anywhere from orange to a vibrant rose color...

Grand Opening

Last May 27th, the office and retail building at Foxworth Galbraith Lumber Company in Winnsboro was destroyed by a fire. On October 18th an official ribbon cutting was held for a new building. According to Manager Wes Eggleston, the company had actually been considering new facilities before the old building burned. "We needed more space and I guess the fire was just the impetus to go ahead and do it.

"The Grand Opening was quite an event with a number of special guests. Mayor Carolyn Jones was there; as was the City Manager, Ronnie Knight. Several other business owners attended including Brookshire's Manager Mike Clark, George Watkins of G&M Antique Clocks, and Tony Grosso of T&M Meatmarket...

Adopt-a-Pet Fundraiser

The first faint signs of autumn are emerging with a hint of color on the Sassafras trees and cool nights that tempt us to throw open the windows and bask in the fresh breeze. And for the few stalwart folks who work tirelessly to help stray and abandoned animals in the Winnsboro area, autumn is also the time for their major fundraising project.

This year they are selling tickets for a chance drawing for three unique decorative items. JoAnn White, president of Adopt-A-Pet, has donated a one-of-a-kind "Lady's Wheelbarrow" that she hand-painted with a spray of flowers. Edna Bridges made a lovely "Sugar Plum" Santa doll, and Eunice Soden created a crib quilt, decorated with kittens and puppies...

It's Birthday Time for Oaklea Mansion

On August 6, Norma Wilkinson, owner of the Oaklea Mansion, launched a year-long birthday celebration with the grand opening of The Carriage House. Formerly the Carlock Mansion, the Oaklea has operated as a bed and breakfast in Winnsboro for six years.
Norma is particularly proud of the rich historical significance of the home, the furnishings, and the Carlock family; and that is what she wants to celebrate. "They were an important part of the social center of Winnsboro in the early 1900s..

Local Boy Does Good

Senior Airman, Nathan Watters, just returned to Texas from the Territorial Army Skill at Arms Meeting, which has been an annual event since 1887. The TASAM is a competition between British and American soldiers. It is, however, only one-third of the triple-header of events that form an overall international competition. The Territorial Army is Great Britain's version of America's National Guard. Each year they host the competition, with the objective of providing realistic training through competitive events as well as building camaraderie within its allied nations...

Valla Faye Robinson

Ms. Robinson passed away July 30th in Tyler at the age of 84. She was so private she probably wouldn't even want an obituary written about her. Roy Gilbreath, her cousin by marriage, said, "If I heard it once, I heard it a hundred times, 'Now, Roy, you know I'm a very private person...'"

Nearly A Lifetime Together

Several hundred people gathered at Shiloh Lutheran Retreat Center on July 6th to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Rod and Georgia Lange. It was a great afternoon of good food, good company, wonderful music, laughter, and stories.

Rod and Georgia met in high school in Lansing, Michigan. He was a senior and she was a junior. They hung around with the same crowd that ate lunches together at school and had Saturday night parties on a regular basis...

Have Lunch With Us

People of all ages stop by McCrary's Hardware Store for lunch and perhaps a treat from the soda fountain. Nothing beats the heat like an old-fashioned milkshake or soda. Ten-month-old Molly Vaughn came recently with her mother, Maegan, and had her first taste of a chocolate soda. By the looks of it, Mom will have to bring Molly back again...

Winnsboro Rodeo

The Winnsboro Rodeo Association teamed up with Gene Smith Rodeo Producers to give spectators a great show the weekend of June 5-7. What a thrill it was when Rhandi Johnson, Rodeo Queen 2002, posted the colors. Her horse, aptly named Stretch, flew around the arena, hooves digging into the sand as the wind snapped the flag. But the delight didn't end there. As contestants for Rodeo Princess, Junior Queen and Queen for this year were introduced, they gave an impressive display of skill as they took their mounts around the arena at a dead run, manes, tails and hair flying in the wind as they seemed to barely skim the surface...

Tree and Berry Farm

Richard and Janet Johnson meant to retire when they bought Cypress Springs Tree & Berry Farm fifteen years ago. In fact, they did retire from jobs that had occupied most of their life previously, but somehow restful days in a hammock with a good book and a glass of iced tea never materialized. "We're driven," Janet said. "Like somebody is behind us with a whip."

Richard laughed. "But we're the ones with the whips..."

Spinning Some Fine Yarn

Much like the women of a different era, Becky Pickett and Janet Kaslon spend a great deal of time at spinning wheels and weaving looms. "It's profound," Becky said. "I feel so connected to those pioneer women. Here I am doing the same thing they did, and I try to imagine what it must have been like to do this of necessity. They wove all their own fabric and made their linens and clothes, even underwear. I don't know how one woman did it all for a family.

Berries, Berries, Berries

Deep in the woods a few miles out of town is a little piece of paradise that belongs to Al Moore and Ila McNulty. They literally tamed this section, which used to total about thirty-five acres when they bought it in 1991. That's when they started spending weekends out here, counting the weeks until they could retire and become full-time residents. "The weeds and brush were so high," Al said, "I had to stand on the seat of the tractor to see over them when I was shredding."

New Schedule for Historic Railroad

Rusk - During its' 2003 season the venerable Texas State Railroad is operating on a different schedule than it has in years past. The grandfather of Texas steam excursion trains is running only one steam locomotive powered train. This is a result of a plan first conceived in 1999. The historic short line applied for and received a grant that year to completely renovate the railroad. As part of this grant, engines Number 201 and Number 500 are getting badly needed new boilers. The new boilers are being constructed to original specifications. The only difference is that modern metallurgy and manufacturing techniques are being incorporated. JerryCo Machine & Boiler Works of Houston was awarded the contract to build the new boilers...

Preserving the Past

Like many other business owners in Winnsboro, Barbara Hums and Barb Richert appreciate the historic treasures of the historic buildings in downtown. Almost nine years ago, they bought the old Cain Bank Building and used it to create The Winnsboro Bakery and Café. "We lived in Dallas at the time," Barb said, "and came out here on weekends to our home on Lake Cypress. When we decided we'd had enough of the corporate life, we thought about opening a bakery and decided to do it here. There wasn't anything like it in the city at the time, and we were certain that people would support it."

Riding for a Cause

Nearly ten thousand bicyclists from around the nation, including several Wood and Franklin County residents, will participate in a two-day, 180-mile bicycle ride to raise money to help those with multiple sclerosis. Because of its size, the 19th annual BP MS150 bicycling event will begin at both Tully Stadium, on the outskirts of Houston and Rhoades Stadium in nearby Katy on April 12th and will end in downtown Austin the following day. This and similar rides around the state and country have been set up by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to raise funds primarily for research, education, and direct patient services or assistance...
