On Sunday, February 15, five undaunted men showed up on a cold, wet day to participate in the Center Fire Lever Action Cowboy Silhouette Match, which was held at the Harold Dodgen Memorial Range just outside of Winnsboro. When asked if the meet would be canceled due to the poor weather, Treasurer Loyd Moody said no. "We never cancel a match. On the other hand, the shooters may decide to cancel once they get here. But that seldom happens." True to their commitment, the men slogged through the mud to set up the targets for the match. The targets, consisting of small metal replicas of rams, pigs, chickens, and ducks were positioned at varying distances in groups of ten. The entire course consists of 40 targets.
Thanksgiving
- a day for gathering with family and friends to celebrate the blessings
of the past year. Sometimes the circumstances of life are such that it
is hard to find something to be thankful for, but even in the bleakest
of times, there can be surprises. Texas in the Civil War: An Embattled State
For many, the American Civil War evokes images of legendary battles in Gettysburg, Bull Run and Shiloh. For Texans, the war also conjures up stories about the battles of Galveston, Sabine Pass and Palmito Ranch. Texas soldiers fought in other states, battled frontier and border raiders, protected internal trade routes, evaded federal blockades, supplied manufactured goods and operated prisoner of war camps. In Texas, Confederate and state forces battled Union troops along the Gulf Coast and on the plains...
"Used to be" for the League included a membership that would fill the meeting room at the old Winnsboro Bank and Trust - seventy-plus members. A young and vibrant organization, the League was involved with, or sole sponsors of many projects that benefited the city, including acquiring the cement planters along Main Street...
My day would start with breakfast in bed, and I didn't care that the orange juice was lukewarm, the toast was cold, and the eggs overcooked. By the time the whole crew bounced on the bed a few times, it all got dumped in the middle of the blanket and the dog got the eggs...
Mauldin portrayed the realities of war, which brought humor to the battlefield, through his cartoons. His best known cartoon characters were "Willie and Joe", two scruffy infantry GI's, who were based loosely on Mauldin and his father. The ex-GI enlisted in the Army in 1940 and was assigned as a rifleman in the 180th infantry when he began drawing cartoons on military life for the 45 Division's newspaper...
One of the pleasures of life is to meet strangers that become good friends. In 1988, I was struggling to start a new service business in Winnnsboro, called R.H. McCrary Services. Someone reffered me to the McCormack's to take care of repairs at their farm in the Pineview area. After meeting these folks, I was immediately made to feel welcome at and home around them. It was a pleasure to take care of needs at two homes at their farm for several years. I was entrusted with keys to the homes and made regular stops to check on things for Don and Lu...
ACK!!! Only two more weeks until Christmas. My husband just had to remind me of this yesterday as we discussed the merits of a live tree over a plastic one. This being our first year in the Piney Woods, I thought it appropriate to do the real thing. After all, we have five acres of trees to choose from. Then he had to remind me of the kids who are allergic to pine trees. It was a tough choice - a visit from the kids or a real tree? Just as I was thinking a nice quiet Holiday alone might be fun, my husband announced he was going to Wal-Mart. They have a nice sale on tabletop trees... There's an old Thanksgiving song that starts out, "Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go..." When I was a child, my Dad would break into that song as we crossed the Pennsylvania border into West Virginia on our annual pilgrimage to celebrate the Holiday with his family. "The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh, through the white and drifting snow..."
